Gopeshwar is a small town holds a great mythological and religious value for the local Garhwalis. It is the administrative headquarters of the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand in India. Situated 1,300 m (4,600 ft) above sea level, it is famous for its weather (pleasant most of the year, but very cold in December and January) and its temples. It is the largest town in Chamoli district.
An ancient temple of Lord Shiva now known as Gopinath Mandir is a place where there is a sacred meeting of the Vaishnav and Shaivite faiths as, at this venerated temple, both deities are worshipped.
Gopeshwar is the place where the people of Garhwal truly found their voice during the now world-renowned Chipko Andolan in a unique bid to protect their traditional rights, and the Himalayan ecology and environment.

Gopeshwar is in between Kedarnath-Badrinath road situated 10 km from its district Chamoli. Chamoli is in Badrinath Highway can be reached by big cities of Uttarakhand and capital of India. Chamoli is 215 km from Rishikesh.
