Pithoragarh


Pithoragarh is the easternmost district of Uttarakhand, neighbouring Tibet in the north and Nepal in the east. A place of exquisite natural beauty and serenity, Pithoragarh is popularly known as the 'Little Kashmir'. This captivating town with fascinating forests around it is located at an impressive height of 1,645 m and is nestled in a small valley. Pithoragarh town is a historical landmark. It was a major center of power during the regime of the Chand Kings in Kumaon.

From here, pilgrims take their journey to the holy shrines, Kailash and Mansarovar.This valley also nestles the snow-crested peaks Nanda Devi East (7,434 m) and West (7,817 m). Below these mighty peaks lie the alpine valleys and glaciers like Milam, Ralam, Namik and Sundardunga.

1. Askot Musk Deer Sanctuary
Askot Musk Deer Sanctuary is located 54 km from Pithoragarh near Askot in Uttarakhand state of India. This sanctuary has been set up primarily with the object of conserving the musk deer (Moschus leucogaster) and its habitat. Intensive efforts have been initiated to conserve this rare species. Other mammals found in this sanctuary include the Bengal tiger,[1] Indian leopard, Himalayan jungle cat, civet, barking deer, serow, goral and Himalayan brown bear. Many species of high altitude birds are also found in this sanctuary.

2.Dhwaj Temple
Dhwaj Temple in Pithoragarh locale of Uttarakhand is arranged at a separation of 10 kms from the primary Pithoragarh town.Devotees and sightseers are likewise required to trek 4km in the midst of the thick woods inorder to reach the temple, which is arranged on a slope and offers mesmerizingview of the Himalayan pinnacles.

3. Kapileshwar Mahadev
A cave temple of Lord Shiva located just outside Pithoragarh city. Here you can have a glance of the Sor Valley and wide range of Himalayas

4. Thal Kedar
A religious altar devoted to Lord Shiva arranged at a stature of 8300ft. It is a temple situated on the Kumaon slopes in the Soar Valley.
