Forest Research Institute (FRI), Dehradun


Forest Research Institute is one of the prestigious institutes of India in the field of forestry and a popular place to visit in Dehradun. The place is dedicated for studying the plants, animals, climate, and topography of the Himalayan forests.
The main attraction of this institute is the Greco-roman colonial architectural style Building.
FRI has six museums related to forestry, which include museums on social forestry, pathology, silviculture, timber, non-wood forest products, and entomology.
Forest Research Institute is spread over 4.5 square kilometer which is home to different varieties of trees, plants, and animals – especially a wide range of migratory birds. The visitors can have a peaceful walk on the beautiful green campus. View of Himalaya in the background enhances the beauty of FRI. Apart from this the place also has a Botanical Garden, which is a popular picnic spot among travellers.
There are some really interesting facts on nature like the 800 yr old tree trunk which was still preserved.
On 21st June 2018, Forest Research Institute hosted International Yoga Day where PM Participated.
Many popular movies are also shooted here like Mohabbatein, Student of the year, Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein, Krishna Cottage etc.

Entry Fees - Rs 10 per head and Rs 50 for the museum.

BEST TIME TO VISIT-
The best time to visit the Forest Research Institute is from March to June since the weather is pleasant and skies are mostly clear. The temperature ranges from 17° Celcius to 35° Celcius. If you visit FRI in holidays then there will be very less crowd.

How To Reach

By Road-FRI is located at about 7 km from the famous Clock Tower on the Dehradun-Chakrata Road, which can be easily reached by shared or private vehicle. Dehradun can easily be reached by the public and private vehicle as it is well connected with big cities. Dehradun is 270 km from the country capital Delhi.
By Train- Dehradun is connected by regular train services to cities Delhi, Lucknow, Allahabad, Mumbai, Kolkata, Ujjain, Chennai and Varanasi. The Dehradun Railway Station is located 1-2 kilometres away from the city centre.
By Air- Dehradun’s airport is the Jolly Grant Airport, which is located 20 km away from the city centre. Air India, Jet Airways, Jet Konnect and Spice Jet have regular flights to Dehradun.
