Khaliya top trek is a paradise for Trekkers situated at a height of 11500 ft above sea level at Munsiyari in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand
Khaliya Top is a hilltop has a beautiful Alpine meadow surrounded by snow-laden peaks which offers a magnificent 360degree view of great Himalayan ranges. The five famous peaks namely Panchachuli, Hardeol, Rajrambha, Nandakot and Nandadevi are clearly visible from Khaliya Top.
Khaliya top trek is one of the best treks of Kumaun Himalayas.
The trek of Khaliya top surrounded by forests of Pine, Deodar, Oaks, Spruce and Cypress, but the most attractive tree we came across as we gained height was the Rhododendron trees (Buransh in local language). In spring the whole jungle turns red with the rhododendron flowers.
This place is home to various birds and animals, with a sharp eye one can discover hidden treasures of nature like Monal, Ghurar, Kakar, yellow fronted marten and Baral (mountain goat).
Khaliya top also offers skiing in winters.
the state government is now looking at developing the town of Munsiyari in Pithoragarh district and its surrounding areas as a mountain biking destination.
About ten trails varying between 3.5km to 20km in length have been identified in and around the highest point near Munsiyari. Some trails are easy and would serve beginners, while a few are more challenging and are meant for seasoned bikers. An eight-roomed guest house owned by GMVN that is lying unused in the area can also be utilized and incorporated as part of the trail.
The tourism department also plans to rope in villages located around Khaliya Top as part of the biking trails, to make it a cultural tourism package.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
The months March-June and mid-September-October are perfect for visiting Khaliya Top trek.
But If you want to go for snow and do skiing then winter is the best time, whereas spring (Feb-march) is the best time if you want to see the blossom of rhododendron flowers.
Trek of 6 km begins from Balati farms situated at the distance of 10 km on Thal-Munsiyari Road.
Munsiyari can be reached by following ways-
By Road- Munsiyari is connected with major cities of Uttarakhand State. can be reached by using local taxis. Buses are available from Haldwani and Tanakpur in morning. One can also use direct Bus from Delhi to Munsiyari through Anand Vihar Bus Stand during the afternoon. Since the journey from Delhi to Munsiyari is quite long, it is advisable to break your journey at various stops and finally change the bus from either Almora or Pithoragarh.
By Air- Pantnagar airport is the nearest airport to Munsiyari lying at a distance of 249 km. Naini Saini Airport in Pithoragarh at a distance of 213 km is the other option, however, the flight are not that frequent from this airport.
BY RAIL- Kathgodam (275 km) and Tanakpur (286 km) are the two best options of the nearest railway head to reach Munsiyari via rail. These stations are well connected to many major cities via good rail network. Cabs and buses can be hired from outside the station till Munsiyari.
