Tehri Garhwal is one of the largest districts in the hill state of Uttarakhand.
The name Tehri has been derived from Trihari, signifying a place that washes away the three types of sins – sins born out of Mansa, Vacha and Karmana or thought, word and deed, respectively. Garh in Hindi means fort.
Asia’s largest rock filled dam. Development of the Tehri Dam on the confluence of Bhagirathi and Bhilangana rivers completely submerged the old town of Tehri which was 16 ks from New Tehri, and the population was moved to the town of New Tehri.
However, a majority of tourists are oblivious to the fact that Tehri has a fascinating history of kingdoms, protests, sacrifices resulting in the submergence of old Tehri and the rise of New Tehri. To relive the history of Tehri and promote tourism & Clean Ganga campaign, Government of Uttarakhand is organising the 4th “Tehri Lake Festival" at Koti Colony, Tehri Lake, New Tehri from 25th -27th May 2018.
1. Tehri Dam
Tehri Dam, an engineering marvel and one of the world’s largest hydroelectric project is the pride of Tehri. The dam harnesses water of two important Himalayan rivers- Bhagirathi and Bhilangana. The ruins of Old Tehri lies under water today and New Tehri is a modern town spread over an altitude from 1550-1950 mts above sea level overlooking the gigantic lake and Tehri Dam.
2. Surkhanda Devi Temple
Surkhanda Devi Temple is about 8 km from Dhanolti at an altitude of 2903 m. The temple is located a highest peak in the locality making a perfect view point ringed by dense forests in a sanctified spot. For reaching the temple, one has to walk 2 km from the motor road at Kaddulkhal.
Devprayag (Deva prayāga) is a town and a nagar panchayat (municipality) in Tehri Garhwal district in the state of Uttarakhand, India, and is one of the Panch Prayag (five confluences) of Alaknanda River where Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers meet and take the name Ganga or Ganges River.
Chamba is a pristine town and hill station tucked in Tehri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand,It is situated at a junction of roads connecting Mussoorie and Rishikesh with the Tehri Dam reservoir and New Tehri.
